The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has warned against a number of pharmaceutical companies that were charging a big price for its heartburn drug Nexium to treat acid reflux disease. In recent years, the FDA has been making some changes to their prescribing habits.
“The FDA is advising patients that the new ‘sulphite’ pricing policy is not appropriate. This pricing is not appropriate for the drug used to treat GERD, and is not in the best interest of patients,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The new rule is likely to be the latest in an attempt to force the drug makers to reduce their prices, Woodcock said. The drugmaker said it was reviewing the new pricing policy.
The company was also told the price would be increased for patients who are elderly and have a family history of acid reflux. The new policy will apply only to prescription drugs such as Nexium, he said.
The price increases are not in response to a recent report by the FDA that found that more than 50 percent of the drug makers were charging more for the drug. However, the price was not set for people who are 65 or older.
The drug is a heartburn treatment, and has been known to have heartburn symptoms, like frequent heartburn. The FDA has been making some changes to its prescribing and monitoring guidelines.
But the increase in the price was not a new problem for the company. It was the result of a review by the FDA into the drug’s manufacturing and distribution practices. The review found that most drugmakers were not taking into account the cost of the drug.
“We are reviewing the data and will make any changes that are appropriate to the drug,” Woodcock said.
The new pricing policy will apply only to prescriptions, not to new drugs. The company is also working on ways to reduce the cost for older drugs.
“The FDA is recommending that consumers be encouraged to be aware of the new pricing policies and should exercise caution when reviewing drugs that are being sold in this manner, such as Nexium, and other older drugs,” Woodcock added. “The cost of the drugs should be borne by patients, rather than by taxpayers and their taxpayers,” she said.
For the most part, Woodcock said, the FDA has been monitoring the price of Nexium for patients using it.
In some cases, the FDA has issued new recommendations that may be necessary, he said.
But in other cases, the agency has been monitoring a number of drug companies that have faced similar price increases.
“The agency is working closely with manufacturers to monitor these companies to ensure that they are working to make sure their prices are being kept safe and appropriate,” Woodcock added.
In other cases, the FDA has been working with the manufacturers to increase the price for drugs that have been found to be too high.
For example, the FDA has been monitoring Nexium for patients who are elderly and those who have a family history of acid reflux disease, and has recommended that patients not take it for at least a few months.
If the company were to do so, it would face a price hike of $2.50 a tablet, or $4,600 for a 500-milligram tablet of Nexium, the FDA said.
“Patients should be aware of the increased costs of these medications,” Woodcock said.
The FDA has also been working with the manufacturers to address a number of manufacturers’ claims that they are raising the price of the drug, he added.
For example, the FDA has been monitoring the price of Nexium for patients who are elderly and those who have a family history of acid reflux disease. The FDA has recommended that patients not take it for at least a few months.
If the company were to do so, it would face a price hike of $6,600 for a 500-milligram tablet of Nexium.
In the latest price increase, the FDA said, the company was notified of a price increase to $6,800, which is a decrease of about 7 percent.
It was also told that it would be required to pay $5,000 in the event that the company did not make the necessary adjustments.
The FDA also issued a warning about the increased price for the drug that has caused the company to withdraw the drug from the market.
